Solanum lycopersicum
This fabulous old heirloom variety produces a dark skinned, almost purple coloured, sweet fleshed tomato of the absolute highest quality. Tomatoes are very nitrogen-hungry plants so prepare the soil by integrating a mix of compost and chicken manure to your patch a fortnight prior to planting. Choose a sunny, well-drained position and preferably a spot where you haven't grown tomatoes in the previous season.
How to plant: Propagate in seed trays. Tomatoes can be grown in large pots but do better in an in-ground veggie patch. It is recommended to pinch out the first side shoots to encourage plant growth.
