Beta vulgarus
Swiss Chard is hardy, shade tolerant, spectacularly beautiful and can be grown all year round. Rainbow Chard should be a part of every veggie patch. Although technically an annual, it can grow beyond 12 months, producing tender, sweet leaves that come in a full spectrum of colour. Position plants in full sun, but they will benefit from some shading in warmer weather. Plant next to larger plants such as corn, or around onions and beetroot.
How to plant: Sow seeds directly into the veggie patch.
