Eruca vesicaria ssp. sativa
Rocket is one of the most popular leafy greens for our veggie patches. Easy to grow at most times of the year, it has a slightly peppery flavour which increases in pungency as the flower heads shoot. Being part of the brassica family, it is also a favoured crop of the white cabbage moth, however, they are not as vivacious towards this variety of rocket as some others. Prefers full-sun but some shade will be tolerated. Prepare soil with compost and well-rotted manure and leave to settle for 1-2 weeks prior to planting. Fresh manure has a tendency to burn rocket seedlings.
How to plant: Use a free-draining soil or a good quality potting mix if growing in pots. Sow seeds directly into the parch during the warmer periods of autumn and spring, otherwise it is best to propagate in a seed tray and transplant when conditions are suitable. Cut flower heads to promote new growth. This plant is a reliable self seeder.
