Allium fistulosum
Red stemmed spring onion that originates in Japan. It is easy to grow and well suited to a variety of soil types. This is the most popular heirloom variety. Rather than harvesting the entire onion, cut it down and this will allow it to regenerate and produce further harvests. Make sure the soil is well-draining and does not contain an excessive amount of nitrogen. Onions mainly require potassium, so apply potash or wood ash prior to planting. Plant in full sun to part shade, preferably in a spot that follows leafy crops such as lettuce or cabbage. Sow the seeds directly into the veggie patch.
