Magnolia liliiflora 'Nigra' × stellata 'Rosea'
'Susan' is a slow growing, deciduous magnolia with a compact, upright habit. It belongs to the 'Little Girl' series of hybrid Magnolias. In mid-late spring, reddish-purple buds open to reveal fragrant, narrow, goblet-shaped blooms, purple-red on the outside and paler inside. After the flowers, mid-green, ovate foliage appears, before turning golden-yellow in autumn.
This magnolia is known to sometimes flower sporadically after spring if moisture is sufficient.
As with all magnolias, it prefers a moist, fertile and well-drained soil that is slightly acidic. A sunny aspect in a protected position is best. They also tolerate partial shade, and some protection from strong wind will enhance and prolong the flowering season.
