M. liliiflora 'Nigra' × stellata
'Ricki' is a compact magnolia with a shrubby habit, perfect for courtyards or small gardens. In late spring, stunning, goblet-shaped blooms in reddish-purple appear on bare branches, followed by ovate, mid-green foliage that turns a bronzy-yellow in autumn.
As with all Magnolias, it prefers a moist, fertile and well-drained soil that is slightly acidic. A sunny aspect in a protected position is best. They also tolerate partial shade, and some protection from strong wind will enhance and prolong the flowering season.
