Magnolia x loebneri
'Merrill' is a deciduous magnolia with a vigorous, upright growth habit. Masses of large white blooms appear on bare branches before the oblong foliage unfurls. The blooms are approx. 10cm across and have 15 tepals. The blossoms are blushed pink at their base and emit a lovely fragrance. This magnolia blooms from an early age, so you don't have to wait too long to enjoy the beauty of these amazing flowers.
As with all magnolias, it prefers a moist, fertile and well-drained soil that is slightly acidic. A sunny aspect in a protected position is best. They also tolerate partial shade, and some protection from strong wind will enhance and prolong the flowering season.
