Magnolia x soulangeana
'Lennei alba' is considered one of the most beautiful deciduous white magnolias. An early flowering variety, its large, goblet-shaped flowers adorn bare branches in spring making an eye stopping show. Sometimes known as the Saucer Magnolia, the flowers emit a subtle lemon fragrance. The thicker petals mean the flowers are more resistant than some varieties to spring rain and wind. Although quite slow growing, 'Lennei alba' does well even in warmer climates.
As with all magnolias, it prefers a moist, fertile and well-drained soil that is slightly acidic. A sunny aspect in a protected position is best. They also tolerate partial shade, and some protection from strong wind will enhance and prolong the flowering season.
