Magnolia liliiflora
'Holland Red' is a smaller variety of magnolia, and makes the perfect specimen tree for smaller gardens or to plant in pots. It has a bushy, erect growth habit and in spring the bare branches are adorned by masses of tulip-shaped, deep reddish-purple flowers that emit a subtle spicy fragrance.
As with all magnolias, it prefers a moist, fertile and well-drained soil that is slightly acidic. A sunny aspect in a protected position is best. They also tolerate partial shade, and some protection from strong wind will enhance and prolong the flowering season.
