Lactuca sativa
'Boston" lettuce is a heading type of lettuce, large and tender, and best picked leaf by leaf and is a great choice for salads. It does not have a bitter taste and is easy to grow, coping well in various soil types and in shaded spaces. The main requirement is lots of water. Prepare the soil with manure and compost 1-2 weeks before planting, use green manure as fresh manure tends to burn the young seedlings. Prefers full sun but will tolerate some shade.
How to plant: Sow the seeds directly into the veggie patch or into punnets and then transfer once germinated. Sow on the surface of the bed, making sure birds do not peck at the seeds.
