Kalmia latifolia
Kalmia latifolia It is a close relation of rhododendrons and azaleas and grows best in a cold climate. A broadleaf evergreen shrub from the Ericaceae family, it is native to the eastern USA.
The plant looks best when grown in dappled sunlight however it also does well in a sunny or semi-shade position. 'Ostbo Red' has showy clusters of rose coloured, cup-shaped flowers that appear in mid-late spring before distinctive red flowers emerge to provide a spectacular display of colour. Deadhead flowers promptly and prune straight after flowering to avoid removing new buds.
Plant in moist, well-drained acidic soil rich in compost. Be sure to water regularly as the plant has a shallow root system and fertilize sparingly as applying too much may hinder flower growth.
Grows to 4.5m (H) x 4.5m (w)
