Beta vulgaris
'Detroit' is the most popular all-purpose red beet. It is uniform and smooth, and has a dark blood-red flesh that is sweet and tasty. The attractive foliage can be picked and used as salad greens. This variety of beets was first introduced in the 19th century. Grows best in well-drained, humus-rich soil, compost before planting. Plant in full sun to part shade.
How to plant: Sow directly into the patch at a depth of 1cm. Soaking the seeds overnight prior to planting aids germination. Once the seeds have germinated, they will need thinning out to allow adequate growth space.
