 Laurus nobilis

The bay laurel is part of the Lauraceae family and native to the Mediterranean region. It is considered to be one of the oldest cultivated trees.

An aromatic, evergreen tree with shiny dark-green leaves, it is best known and used as a kitchen herb. During springtime, the plant is covered in small clumps of yellow flowers that are followed by small purple drupes that contain a single seed. It grows well in containers and can also be trimmed into topiary shapes.

Best grown in a sunny position with well-draining soil that is rich in organic matter. Fertilize regularly with an all purpose fertiliser to ensure healthy growth. Water moderately and ensure roots do not get soggy.

If planted in the garden a bay tree can grow to 12m (H) x 10m (W). Trim persistently to keep to a smaller size.
