Magnolia stellata ('Waterlily' x OP)
'Royal Star' is a delightful, compact form of Star Magnolia with a rounded habit that is robust and fast growing. In early spring, masses of pale-pink buds open to reveal unusually large, pure white, fragrant flowers that have a slight hue of pink. Each blossom has up to 25-30 tepals and the overall effect created when in bloom is of a starburst. After the flowers, large, medium-green foliage unfurls to provide an elegant contrast of colours.
This stunning, early flowering variety was a recipient of the Award of Garden Merit from the RHS.
As with all magnolias, it prefers a moist, fertile and well-drained soil that is slightly acidic. A sunny aspect in a protected position is best. They also tolerate partial shade, and some protection from strong wind will enhance and prolong the flowering season.
