Magnolia x soulangeana
'Nigra' is a small deciduous magnolia with luscious green foliage and upright, rounded growth habit. In late spring, upright pointed, fragrant blossoms in dark reddish-purple adorn the tree in a dramatic fashion. Originally from Japan, this tree won the Award of Garden Merit by the Royal Horticultural Society. This is an elegant addition to even a small garden.
As with all magnolias, it prefers a moist, fertile and well-drained soil that is slightly acidic. A sunny aspect in a protected position is best. They also tolerate partial shade, and some protection from strong wind will enhance and prolong the flowering season.
