Magnolia x loebneri
This magnolia forms a medium sized, deciduous tree of exceptional beauty when in full bloom. Purple buds on bare branches open to reveal fragrant, cyclamen-purple blooms that feature a soft white tinge on the inside. Petals are narrow and strap-like, similar to the Star Magnolia. The tree blooms profusely in early-mid spring before narrow, ovate leaves unfurl. Makes a truly stunning specimen tree for the garden.
As with all magnolias, it prefers a moist, fertile and well-drained soil that is slightly acidic. A sunny aspect in a protected position is best. They also tolerate partial shade, and some protection from strong wind will enhance and prolong the flowering season.
