Magnolia x soulangeana
'Lennei' is smaller than most Saucer Magnolias and is known for its dramatic spring blooms. In early-mid spring large, goblet-shaped flowers appear on bare limbs to provide a spectacular and fragrant addition to the garden. The blooms are purplish-magenta on the outside and pure white on the inside. Foliage is large, ovate and dark green. Magnolias are best pruned mid-summer when in full leaf.
As with all magnolias, it prefers a moist, fertile and well-drained soil that is slightly acidic. A sunny aspect in a protected position is best. They also tolerate partial shade, and some protection from strong wind will enhance and prolong the flowering season.
