Kalmia latifolia
Kalmia latifolia 'Mountain Laurel' is sometimes known as Calico Bush. It is a close relation of rhododendrons and azaleas and grows best in a cold climate. A broadleaf evergreen shrub from the Ericaceae family, it is native to the eastern USA.
The plant looks best when grown in dappled sunlight however it also does well in a sunny or semi-shade position. Mountain Laurel provides a showy display of white flowers that emerge in late spring and summer. Deadhead flowers promptly and prune straight after flowering to avoid removing new buds.
Plant in moist, well-drained acidic soil that is compost rich. Be sure to water regularly as the plant has a shallow root system and fertilize sparingly as applying too much may hinder flower growth.
