Kalmia latifolia
Kalmia latifolia It is a close relation of rhododendrons and azaleas and grows best in a cold climate. A broadleaf evergreen shrub from the Ericaceae family, it is native to the eastern USA.
Foliage on 'Bulls Eye' is smaller than other varieties, undulate and glossy deep-green. New growth emerges with reddish bronze hues. In late spring-early summer, attractive dark-purple flower buds open to reveal a stunning display of dark pink flowers banded in crimson with a white throat and white edge.
The plant looks best when grown in dappled sunlight however it also does well in a sunny or semi-shade position. A showy display of white flowers emerge in late spring and summer. Deadhead flowers promptly and prune straight after flowering to avoid removing new buds.
Plant in moist, well-drained acidic soil that is compost rich. Be sure to water regularly as the plant has a shallow root system and to fertilize sparingly, applying too much may hinder flower growth.
