Kalmia latifolia
Kalmia latifolia 'Elf' is a dwarf cultivator with foliage and plant height around half that of other laurels. It is a close relation of rhododendrons and azaleas and grows best in a cold climate. A broadleaf evergreen shrub from the Ericaceae family, it is native to the eastern USA. This variety is perfect for small locations around the garden and looks great in mass plantings.
The plant looks best when grown in dappled sunlight however it also does well in a sunny or semi-shade position. A showy display of nearly-white flowers, just slightly smaller than those on other laurels, appear in late spring and typically cover the shrub for several weeks. Deadhead flowers promptly and prune straight after flowering to avoid removing new buds.
Plant in moist, well-drained acidic soil that is compost rich. Be sure to water regularly as the plant has a shallow root system and fertilize sparingly as applying too much may hinder flower growth.
Young plants grow vigorously and can become leggy without pruning.
Grows to 60-90cm (H) x 60-90cm (W)
