Kalmia latifolia
Kalmia latifolia 'Clementine Churchill' is a close relation of rhododendrons and azaleas and grows best in a cold climate. It is a broadleaf and bushy evergreen shrub from the Ericaceae family, it is native to the eastern USA.
The plant looks best when grown in dappled sunlight however it also does well in a sunny or semi-shade position. In late spring and early summer, Clementine Churchill provides a showy display of rose-pink flowers with deep red markings. Deadhead flowers promptly and prune straight after flowering to avoid removing new buds.
Plant in moist, well-drained acidic soil that is compost rich. Be sure to water regularly as the plant has a shallow root system and fertilize sparingly as applying too much may hinder flower growth.
