Blueberries - The Miracle Fruit
How often do we hear blueberries referred to as a 'superfood'?
The blueberry is bursting with nutrients, is sweet, and a very convenient snack option.
The blueberry bush is a flowering shrub that produces berries, green in colour when they first appear, gradually turning purple and blue as they ripen.
A one-cup serving of blueberries contains 25% of the recommended daily value for vitamin C and 4 grams of dietary fibre, but only 80 calories. Plus, blueberries are juicy fruits, which means they contain mostly water.
Some of the advantages of adding blueberries to you daily diet include:
- low calorie but high in nutrients
- may help lower bad cholesterol
- may assist in the prevention of high blood pressure and heart disease
- contain VItamin C and K, manganese and fibre
Take advantage of blueberries when they're plentiful. Store fresh blueberries in the refrigerator and wash before serving. To freeze, wash and dry the berries, lay them on a pan and freeze until they're solid, then pack the berries in freezer-safe storage bags.
Blueberry plants grow best in cool, temperate zones in Australia, with most varieties requiring a winter frost in order to set fruit.
Self-pollinating varieties such as Early Blue, a Northern Highbush, is a vigorous growing plant producing an early crop of beautiful sweet and aromatic berries.
