Zea mays
'Sweet' is a variety of corn that has a high sugar content and juicy kernels. Corn is a wind pollinated vegetable that bump into each other dislodging pollen from the tassel on top to the silk on each developing cob. If growing in small numbers, hand pollination is recommended. Corn is a voracious feeder and will require a well prepared soil. Add compost and fresh manure a fortnight before planting. Requires full sun with some protection from wind. It is worth noting that corn is a tall plant that casts a long shadow, so position accordingly.
How to plant: Best grown in an in-ground veggie patch. Sow seeds directly into the patch once the temperature reaches 20C and make sure to mulch around the plants once established. Feed with fish fertiliser monthly.
